Can I Lift This Weight?

Can I lift this weight?
If I always lift the same weight, how will I ever discover how much weight I can actually lift? At first pushing a heavier weight is difficult, but then the muscles adjust, and the weight isn’t as heavy anymore... then you progress to the next weight and your muscles take time to adjust again. But eventually the weight feels light and so you go a step further and the process repeats itself.
If I don’t step out and attempt to lift the heavier weight I will always lift light and I’ll never be as strong as I am able.
It’s not the weights fault, it’s not that the body builder is stronger or more able, it’s that I didn’t push my limits. I didn’t stretch myself. I didn’t go beyond my comfort zone.
The heart is a muscle and it works in the same way. When we try something new it can be scary, even daunting. I think it’s super easy to get caught up in being human and in our experiences that lifting weights can feel lonely. Or we might fear that if we said something, others might think we are mentally weak and so we carry the burden alone, we don’t ask for a spotter.
We forget many others have journeyed along a similar path and they have answers to our questions, to our doubts, to our anxieties. Answers full of hope and inspiration. And when we find such a person we learn to laugh at our experience because it no longer feels as daunting. It becomes a light weight on our journey. And we learn we are strong enough to carry on.
The weight is a learning opportunity designed just for us. We can’t control everything that happens, but we can control how we respond. We can choose protection or we can choose growth; when seek to protect ourselves from certain experiences we restrict our inner energy flow. Closing our heart in hopes of not experiencing pain only cuts off the blood flow to the rest of the body and oxygen to the brain. We freeze and that’s when the weight feels heavy.
But if we allow ourselves to experience the fright with faith, hope and love it’ll soon become a light weight too. The key is to remain open to experience everything as it is and show up wholeheartedly. To be curious to everything around you. To give it all of you and play big.
And Like Incubus said in the song “Drive,” “Whatever tomorrow brings I will be there with open arms and open eyes.”
And I believe that’s how we should experience the world. It’s a scary thought, but so many others have experienced similar things we are going through and so we aren’t alone. We are never alone. I am always with you!
